The California Museum

When you work for free...they give you a desk!

This morning I met with one of the program mangers at the California Museum downtown. They are actually in the same building as the state archives - where I want to work. I have a project, and possibly more after that. They gave me a desk, with a pretty good view. Told me my credentials were exceptional, I guess they are nice when you are working for free. It is going to be fantastic and I am really thrilled. I get to do research and maybe even design the graphics that will be on display in the museum. It's a dream - and will give me some really great experience. Maybe I can even find a way to get them to pay me.

On a side note - the curators comments about our state's first lady were really humorous, she has made the museum a pet project, he even said something to the effect of "Once Maria's gone maybe we will get to be a REAL history museum again" :). Also, for all you interested, they just put up an exhibit about purses through the decades which I was quite impressed with.

So Long, Farewell

Yesterday at 4:30 I emailed my boss and our director my formal resignation from my job. I was in a panic for most of the day, but didn't want to wait until Monday and have to worry about it all weekend. I had other things - like moving and school that needed my focus.

After September 10th I will no longer will I see my desk, students, coworkers, etc. on a daily basis. I still feel like it is a little crazy, but it is good to know I am doing the right thing and I am thrilled about all the potential opportunities. I am thrilled to get to focus on school and hopefully get some internships.

For now I just have to try not to think about the potential chaos that could be waiting on Monday morning when I head back to the office.

Graduation Dinner

Last Wednesday we had a graduation dinner for the students who were attending their last summer of courses in Davis. Here is our international group.

Lake

My first non-work weekend was a visit to clearlake with the family.

Giants Game

At the beginning of the year I made a list of the things I wanted to do this year. Included was attend a professional sports game. In July friend C and I went down to SF to see the Giants play the Mets. Besides being terrified that the gulls would let loose over our heads, it was great. The weather was wonderful. We stayed the night at my grandparents and in the morning met one of my students downtown for a day of sightseeing.

That night was C's Shakespeare in the park final performance. Afterwards we shaved his hair. He did an amazing job.

Before and after.

Mexico

Now a long month after my trip, having sufficiently recovered from the summer classes, I can post the few photos that I took - all of the wedding.

I left Thursday night and arrived Friday morning at 6am. My first presentation was at 9am at the law firm of one of my students. I then had a meeting at a law school at 11:30 and then another presentation at another law firm at 1pm. I got a short nap break and then we had an alumni reception at 8pm. It was a long but excellent day.

I must say I was surprised by Mexico City. I loved it! It helped that I had several friends there and they did a significant amount of shuttling around the city. It was wonderful to visit all of them. Another student flew up from Brazil and since it was also his first visit to the city we were able to do some tourist stuff together.

The wedding was beautiful, it was held in a gorgeous church and the reception was at a restaurant in the park at the center of the city overlooking a small lake.

On Sunday we went to the Anthropological Museum, which was fantastic! Then we went to this very authentic restaurant where the Mexican students ordered food and then didn't tell us what it was until after we had eaten it - cue cactus, bone marrow, and ant eggs. Yes, ant eggs and they taste like eggs only look like rice.

In all, a fantastic trip.
