Fun with Bugs

I actually hate bugs - when they are inside. The lines between nature and the modern dirt that is my office should be clearly defined.

Last week I was standing in front of C's desk, probably complaining about something, when he made a funny face and said (in a deliberately calm tone) "slowly take two steps to your right". I was practically paralyzed with fear.

As I turned there was a huge black spider dangling from the ceiling right behind where I was standing. C thought it had landed on me. I hyperventilated a little bit.
Not two days later I opened my front door and another - even bigger spider swung inward on its invisible string with the force of the door opening and nearly collided with me.

This morning I walked into the office, past my bosses desk - and I stopped dead. There in the middle of the otherwise empty desk was a clear plastic container containing what appeared to be a cockroach. I was later informed that it was a cricket. The container had generously had holes punched in the top of it to give said bug some air.

The story goes like this - the cricket was keeping said boss up last night, so he caught it, put it safely in a container and stuck it in the garage. The next morning leaving for work, he put said container including the cricket in his car. When he walked into the office he brought it with him, telling one coworker "I brought it from home". Sadly my attempt to photograph the office wildlife failed as one of the law students voiced her disgust at the new mascot and when I went to snap the photo cricket was gone.

Mom Jeans!

This weekend I stayed with the folks, I had intended to drive home Sunday night but of course I was having so much fun playing Mexican Train with G, Dan, B and C that I let time slip away. I'd worn paint stained workout pants there and only brought my church clothes for Sunday. Monday morning I would face a problem if an solution couldn't be found. My church clothes would have worked but there was no way the heels I'd worn to church would make it through my workday (especially when I'd just gone to the chiropractor Friday because my feet had been sore to the point of limping for a week) and my sneakers wouldn't have gone well with black tights. I found a pair of suit pants I'd left at home, but they also required the heels - no go.

I sacrificed my pride instead of taking the pain in my feet. I wore a pair of my Mum's old jeans. She'd left them in the closet for J, where I will gladly return them. Lets just say that I was too embarrassed to get out of my car to go get lunch, so I drove across town to where I knew I wouldn't see anyone I knew and then awkwardly got out. I left my desk as rarely as possible and spent a great deal of time obsessing over the fact that the tapered jeans I was wearing were not "me" at all. This story was related, with visual, to all my amused coworkers who apparently had no idea that I was so terrified of unwanted attention. I haven't worn a pair of pants so unflattering since my elementary school stretch-pants days or perhaps the mustard hued plaid pants I had in high school (though that was more a textile issue rather than a fit problem).

My mental state may have suffered but my feet however are fine :)

Needless to say, I am going to start carrying a change of clothes in my car, just in case I am ever again caught without approved pants. Though I suppose a different pair of shoes would have worked equally well.

Mum - I'll upgrade a replacement for you :)

Point Reyes, Abbott's Lagoon

For my birthday I dragged B, G and Mother out to Point Reyes for a walk and picnic lunch. The weather looked beautiful, though there was a lot of wind - resulting in sand blasted facials for everyone when we reached the ocean.

Lunch was fantastic (shout out to the Nugget Market for that one!) and it was great to laugh and visit. We also made it (mostly) without getting lost (one turn around) this is a vast improvement over my and B's 1 hour detour last trip.

Other birthday highlights included dinner with the family on Sunday. A trip to the bookstore. Some lovely phone conversations. Dinner with Cat on Monday and....drum roll - watching my coworkers sing at 4:30pm on Monday when I had several important emails to go out, but since they'd forgotten they felt obliged to interrupt despite my pleading. Not happy. Oh well.

Summer Surprise!

I am so thrilled that J has gotten a job in Sacramento! Can't wait to go pick her and the babes up to bring them home.
